Why You Should Build an Energy-Efficient Home in Knoxville, TN

The Benefits of Energy-Efficient Custom Home Design

In the past several years, we’ve seen a big shift toward sustainability and energy efficiency in home construction. For Knoxville, this isn’t just the latest fad. We want to build homes that are as kind to our wallets as they are to the planet.

At Red Door Homes, we look to create spaces that meet the needs of homeowners while remaining environmentally conscious at the same time. Below are some of the top tips we’ve learned about energy-efficient design in custom homes.

Why Energy Efficiency Matters

With Knoxville’s unique climate, energy plays many different roles in our homes. From AC in the blistering hot summers to heat in those chilly winters, temperature control is a huge part of household energy consumption. Because of this, it’s important to consider energy efficiency in local homes.

But being energy-efficient isn’t just good to save on utility bills - it’s also better for the environment overall. It helps to reduce our carbon footprint in the Knoxville community, giving a healthier planet to our future generations.

Key Components of an Energy-Efficient Home

There are several things to consider when building a home that is truly energy efficient:

Insulation and Sealing

Proper insulation and sealing are fundamental to maintaining your custom home’s temperature. All walls, floors, and attics should be well-insulated with the proper materials to prevent leaks and drafts. Good insulation is one of the earliest steps of the building process that can reduce your energy costs in the long run.

Windows and Doors

Windows and doors are also places where serious energy waste can result. Beyond gaps and cracks, some windows and doors themselves are more energy-efficient. Newer models can reduce heat loss and heat gain throughout the year. This keeps the outdoors truly outdoors, so your indoor environment is comfortable year-round.

Heating and Cooling

As mentioned, your HVAC system has a huge impact on your energy consumption (and therefore, your bill!). A modern, high-efficiency system can give you optimal comfort while using less energy than older models. Make sure you look for an HVAC system that’s an appropriate size for your home while still meeting your needs for Knoxville’s climate.

Solar Energy

Considering going truly modern? Solar panels can greatly reduce your reliance on traditional energy sources, which can reduce your bills and your carbon footprint. With how sunny Knoxville is, it’s a great place to start using solar panels.

Smart Home Technology

Smart thermostats and appliances can help you use energy more efficiently without you having to lift a finger. Consider incorporating more smart tech into your home to save on energy and make your life infinitely easier in the process.

Financial Benefits of Energy-Efficient Homes

There are two sides to the financial benefits of energy-efficient homes. In the short term, your monthly utility bills will decrease. In the long term, your savings add up and eventually offset your initial investment in energy-efficient materials and technology.

Plus, there are many tax incentives, rebates, and grants that encourage Tennesseeans to take advantage of energy-efficient construction. These can help reduce the up-front costs of building, making it an economically smart choice on all sides.

Comfier Living Experience

Not only will your wallet be comfier, but you will be too. Energy-efficient homes are more comfortable and offer a higher quality of living than homes that are not. These homes have more consistent temperatures, reduced noise, and improved air quality. They also tend to maximize natural lighting and ventilation, which can make your living space feel even more inviting.

Plus, living in a home that you know is environmentally sustainable can bring great satisfaction for those who are especially environmentally conscious.

Final Thoughts

We hear the term “energy efficiency” everywhere, but it truly can bring a lot of benefits to the table. Making your custom home energy-efficient can improve the comfort, value, and sustainability of your home in the long run.

FAQs

How much more does it cost to build an energy-efficient home compared to a standard one?

While the initial investment in an energy-efficient home tends to be higher, the long-term savings you get on utility bills can offset these costs. It's also worth considering the increased resale value of an energy-efficient home, which is getting pretty substantial these days.

Are there specific energy-efficient features recommended for Knoxville's climate?

Yes, features such as high-quality insulation, energy-efficient windows, and solar panels all work effectively in Knoxville's climate. Each of these features helps to keep homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

How do I know if my home design is energy efficient?

Look for certifications such as ENERGY STAR or LEED, which tell you that a home meets specific energy efficiency standards. You can also conduct an energy audit to get insights into how well your home utilizes energy.

Can existing homes be retrofitted to become more energy efficient?

Absolutely! Many energy-efficient improvements, such as adding insulation, sealing leaks, and upgrading to high-efficiency HVAC systems, can be made to existing homes to improve their energy performance.

Where can I find more information on incentives for building an energy-efficient home in Tennessee?

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and local utilities often offer programs and incentives for energy-efficient construction and upgrades. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Energy's website provides information on federal tax credits and rebates available to Tennessee homeowners.

What is the difference between a modular home and a stick-built home?

Modular homes are factory-built homes that are partially or entirely assembled in a factory and then brought onto the home site.

Stick-built homes are homes that have not been assembled in any way. These homes are constructed on-site around a stick frame and offer the option of complete customization. Many of our customers find our stick-build homes to be a quality, affordable alternative to modular homes in TN .

What is a construction loan?

A construction loan is the method of financing used when someone contracts to have a house built, as opposed to purchasing a completed home. Construction is financed in two loans: a construction loan for the period of construction, followed by a permanent loan, which pays off the construction loan.

Unlike mortgages, construction loans aren’t meant to be long term. Typically, a schedule is set up to enable funds to be withdrawn as needed to finance the various stages of construction. And, during the time your home is being built, you usually make interest-only payments on the loan.

I really like your homes.
